Criminology and criminal justice degrees equip graduates for rewarding careers in the courts, corrections, law enforcement, victim services, juvenile justice, and many other agencies and organizations—professions that make a meaningful impact on society. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum and hands-on learning experiences, students develop a deep understanding of crime and the criminal justice system. Opportunities such as internships, observing real criminal trials in state and federal courthouses, and traveling abroad to explore global criminal justice systems enhance their education and prepare them for success in a variety of criminal justice fields.

Criminology Minors

Please note that eligible students may only declare one minor in the criminology and criminal justice department.

Environmental Criminology and Crime Analysis (ECCA) Minor

The ECCA minor is open to students of any major and is designed to equip students with modern, interdisciplinary tools and knowledge essential for analyzing and preventing crime and prepare students for careers in criminology, law enforcement, urban planning and public policy.

It is the mission of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice to provide criminological education, research and services to students, practitioners, policymakers and the community through an intellectually challenging environment that promotes collegiality and an educational experience relevant to crime and criminological theory that is meant to engage intellectual inquiry with domestic and international perspectives.

TheÌýBachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal JusticeÌýat the University of Tampa is endorsed by theÌý, an international association established in 1963 to foster professional and scholarly activities in the field of criminal justice. ACJS promotes criminal justice education, research and policy analysis within the discipline of criminal justice for both educators and practitioners. An undergraduate program that has been awarded ACJS certification has demonstrated:

  • a clear sense of its mission and how it fits within the academic institution;
  • a sound curriculum that is designed to meet technological and societal change;
  • clear evidence of program quality and effectiveness based on program outcome assessment;
  • the institutional and programmatic resources to maintain program quality and effectiveness; and
  • a commitment to meet and maintain the integrity standards of the ACJS Code of Ethics.
